About Us
Congregation Beth Torah is a warm, welcoming, and egalitarian Conservative synagogue in Richardson, Texas. We value community, tradition, and connection—many of which are nurtured around our shared meals. We are seeking a Kitchen Coordinator to maintain and enhance the hospitality that supports our weekly Shabbat and community gatherings.
Role Summary
The Kitchen Coordinator ensures the smooth and safe operation of our synagogue kitchen, preparing meals that bring our community together. This includes working closely with the Executive Director, Volunteer Kitchen Team, and Simcha (celebration) Team, to plan menus, prepare meals, and maintain a clean and kosher kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities
Meal Preparation & Kitchen Operations
- Prepare two weekly meals (typically post-services), serving 20–150 people.
- Work alongside volunteers to prep, cook, and clean up after events.
- Ensure presentation and scaling of meals align with event size and community standards.
- Maintain best practices in food safety, hygiene, and kosher compliance.
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and volunteers on menu planning, inventory, and presentation.
- Coordinate with the Facilities Manager for dining area setup and teardown.
- Communicate effectively in English with staff, volunteers, and congregants.
Inventory & Procurement
- Track usage of kitchen supplies (food and non-food).
- Maintain a base level of inventory and notify leadership when restocking is needed.
- Recommend equipment or supply improvements to support efficiency and quality.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 2–5 years of experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen.
- Familiarity with food safety protocols and commercial kitchen operations.
- Understanding of or willingness to learn Jewish dietary laws (Kashrut).
- Ability to guide and supervise volunteers in a supportive, team-oriented environment.
- Legal ability to serve and handle alcoholic beverages.
- Physical ability to lift up to 40 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work in an active kitchen space.
Work Schedule
- Standard Hours: 12 hours/week, typically Thursday through Saturday
- Additional Hours: Some Sundays and Jewish holidays depending on events.
- Training Required: Attendance at training sessions including a scheduled orientation.
