Edmond J. Safra Synagogue (EJSNY) is a flourishing Orthodox Sephardic congregation located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. We are a vibrant spiritual home for families, young professionals, and multigenerational members. Our mission is to foster Torah values, community connection, and Jewish continuity through inspiring prayer, education, and cultural celebration.
Position Summary
We seek a visionary Director of Programming & Events to lead the design and execution of dynamic, high-impact programs and experiences that reflect our Sephardic tradition and community values. This is a leadership role ideal for a creative, organized, and community-oriented professional with experience in Jewish communal programming.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program Development & Execution
- Develop a robust annual calendar of educational, cultural, holiday, and social events.
- Oversee event logistics including scheduling, vendors, venues, supplies, registration, and guest experience.
- Ensure meaningful and age-appropriate programming for diverse demographics (youth, families, singles, adult learners).
2. Community Engagement & Communications
- Build strong relationships with members, educators, artists, and partnering organizations.
- Manage community communication via Constant Contact, WhatsApp, social media, and printed bulletins.
- Maintain a vibrant digital presence (Instagram, Facebook, website updates).
3. Team & Volunteer Management
- Recruit, train, and supervise event staff and volunteers.
- Serve as a key point of contact for program-related inquiries and community involvement.
4. Operations & Administration
- Maintain the synagogue’s master programming calendar, including holiday seating plans.
- Coordinate logistics for High Holiday and flagship events (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Purim, etc.).
- Collaborate with clergy, office staff, and lay leadership for seamless event delivery.
5. Budget & Fundraising Support
- Develop and manage the programming budget.
- Assist with fundraising and grant writing related to programs and events.
6. Evaluation & Continuous Improvement
- Collect participant feedback and track engagement metrics.
- Use data to refine and improve future programming.
Qualifications
- Experience: 3–5+ years in program management, community engagement, or event planning (ideally in a Jewish or nonprofit setting).
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Constant Contact, Canva, WhatsApp group management, social media platforms.
- Communication: Strong writing, editing, and interpersonal skills.
- Organizational: Excellent multitasker with acute attention to detail and calendar coordination.
- Personal Fit: Passion for Jewish life, Sephardic tradition, and creating inclusive, inspiring community experiences.
- Bonus: Familiarity with Orthodox synagogue life, knowledge of Hebrew, and experience with synagogue seating and High Holiday logistics.
