Position Summary
The
Accounting & Finance Manager is responsible for the financial leadership and oversight of one or more SBS client organizations. This includes serving as a key member of each client’s leadership team and a trusted financial advisor to its professional and board leadership. The role includes hands-on financial operations, strategic planning support, budgeting, reporting, and supervision of accounting staff.
This position reports to the Managing Director of Shared Business Services and serves on the SBS leadership team. Functionally, the manager also reports to the executive leadership of each assigned client and regularly engages with their board committees, including Finance and Investment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Serve as a financial leader and strategic partner on the clients’ executive team.
- Build strong relationships with client staff and board members to support effective financial decision-making.
- Act as the professional liaison to each client’s Finance Committee, Treasurer, and Investment Committee.
- Supervise 1–2 direct reports and/or shared/fractional SBS staff performing work for assigned clients.
Finance & Accounting
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes in partnership with client leadership.
- Prepare and deliver monthly and year-to-date financial statements and reports, including variance analyses and dashboards.
- Prepare and oversee monthly close processes and day-to-day accounting transactions.
- Implement, monitor, and continuously improve financial controls and operational procedures.
- Manage cash flow forecasting, treasury oversight, and banking relationships.
- Coordinate with the external CPA firm and support the external audit process and the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other compliance filings.
- Oversee, track, and release restricted funds, manage financial reporting aspects of grants and donations, and ensure accuracy of fund accounting.
- Collaborate with development staff on grant applications, reporting, and stewardship.
Strategic & Operational Support
- Provide analysis and insight to support strategic decision-making.
- Recommend and implement systems and tools that enhance accuracy, transparency, and efficiency.
- Partner with clients and SBS leadership to advance process improvements and organizational effectiveness.
- Monitor risk exposure and ensure strong internal controls are in place to protect client assets.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA or MBA preferred.
- At least 7 years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, or financial analysis.
- Nonprofit experience and familiarity with fund accounting and grant compliance strongly preferred.
- Experience working with executive teams and boards of directors; comfortable presenting financials to non-finance stakeholders.
- Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; ability to coach and manage others.
- Proficiency and experience with financial systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities.
- Proven ability to juggle multiple clients and projects in a shared services environment.
